Create varied quizzes with Random from Topic questions

~4 min read ยท September 2026

Select one eligible Question Bank question for each new attempt while keeping that selection stable through answering, grading, and reporting.

Set up the selector

Tag eligible Question Bank questions with an organization Topic. Add a Random from Topic question to the quiz, choose that source Topic, and preview the quiz before publishing.

Design a balanced pool

Keep questions in one pool comparable in learning objective, difficulty, required response effort, and points. A broad Topic can make attempts unfairly different.

One selection stays fixed for the attempt

A fresh source is selected when a Take or Embed attempt begins. A protected manifest keeps that same question in page checks, validation rerenders, AI feedback, and final submission.

Scoring follows the selected source

The selected question supplies its answer controls, required state, points, feedback, uploads, and automatic, AI, or manual grading rules. Different source questions can therefore produce different possible scores unless the pool is balanced.

Keep at least one eligible source

Disabled questions, questions outside the organization scope, selectors, and questions already in the target quiz are not eligible. Authoring warns about an empty pool, and taking fails safely if no valid source remains.

Organization privacy is preserved

Selection is limited to the organization-scoped Question Bank of the quiz owner and the chosen Topic. Protected attempt data prevents a respondent from substituting another source question.

Reports retain what each person saw

The response stores both the selector slot and selected source. Results, certificates, analytics, grading, PDFs, and CSV or XLSX exports use that persisted mapping while keeping the quiz position of the selector.
