Design a more accessible quiz: question choice, structure, feedback, and media

~6 min read ยท August 2026

Reduce avoidable barriers with concise structure, appropriate question formats, keyboard-friendly interaction, readable media, and feedback that explains the next step.

Before you start

Sign in as a quiz author. Start with a quiz you own, because editing, importing, publishing, and assignment actions reject users who do not own that quiz.

Work through the product

Break long assessments into named pages, keep prompts direct, and choose a question type that measures the intended skill rather than motor precision. Use text alongside media, avoid unnecessary timers, write actionable feedback, and preview the complete quiz with keyboard navigation and a narrow viewport before publishing.

  • Give every meaningful question image a short description in the editor's Description / alt text field. Assistive technology reads that description in place of the picture, so write what the image shows rather than what it is called.
  • Leave the description empty on purpose when the image only decorates text that already carries the meaning, and give Picture Choice options a caption so they are announced by name instead of as a generic picture.

Expected result

The preview has a clear reading order, usable controls, understandable feedback, and question formats that do not make the assessment needlessly difficult to perceive or operate.

Limits, privacy, and control

Do not rely on color, an image, drag-and-drop, or a strict timer as the only way to understand or answer a question. Preview with keyboard navigation and provide an equivalent clear prompt.
